last Sat. at Dances of Vice

On Friday evening, as I faced another year of ignoring my birthday I received an e-mail via Nicki Jaine's publicity list that she would be appearing at Dances of Vice on Jan. 10. My birthday. How convenient. For once I will go do something on my birthday. I have read about Dances of Vice and their lush events from many fabulous online friends so I geared up and went out into the snowy night, which, really, was just snowy enough to add atmosphere to the trek out to Brooklyn (of course I rode the subway, drivers might disagree with me about the weather).

I greatly enjoyed Nicki with her gift of a voice and sensitivity to the words she sings. My second time to see her. Suffice to say that "More, more, more" is my response. A pleasant discovery is Grandpa Musselman and his Syncopators. These young men jass it up in grand 20s fashion. I was quite surprised to find traditionalists, playing early Duke Ellington and late Jelly Roll Morton charts like they like what they are doing. I know I do. Well rehearsed for the cabaret accompaniment they provided to the entertainers as well. One of which was the radiant and costume creator par excellent Amber Ray. Love hearing you sing dear.

Great night. Next time I might even dance.

Some representative photos from the Village Voice.
