For being a boy from Texas and New Orleans, I do seem to have encountered more than a random share of Jews in my life. Ranging from circles of friends in Dallas to my employers in New York (I specialize in a telephony tech product manufactured in Israel) I've met a wide variety of people but I know so little about the birthing of that country which is so often at the center of world head lines: Israel.

This ramble is triggered by this morning's thrift store find: "The Last Escape" by Ruth Kruger (U supposed to be with umlaut) and Peggy Mann (after considerable online research I can't say whether Mann is the same author who wrote the disreputable mary wanna articles for Readers Digest in the 70s/80s). Reading the first pages of the book, "...Last Escape", I start exclaiming that this has gotta be Speilberg's next film. Imagine a hottie red head who is 25 but often mistaken to be 17 slipping from Palestine back to Romainia in order to smuggle illegal immigrant Jews back to Palestine. Although, after some online reading I do see that the escapade is tainted by the fact that after some successes the illegal immigrant movement saw several ships abandoned or sunk with nearly all aboard perishing.

recent activity in Israel where Ruth Kruger is memorialized:

info on the illegal immigrant activities in the formative days of Israel:

I also picked up several Doris Day lps and some Queen Latifah and Rakim and a "Welcome to Finland" cook book.

Happy new year.

Thanks so much!

How very very thoughtful of you with how busy you are to take the time for the b'day greeting.

Thanks again!
